What is a geofence?
A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a real location, such as a building site or warehouse. A phone app can react when the device enters or leaves that area, for example by reminding a worker to start or stop their timer.
How geofencing is used in time tracking
Time tracking apps use geofences in two very different ways. Some track location continuously and use it as proof of presence. Others only use the boundary as a trigger: when a worker arrives at the site, the phone shows a reminder to clock in, and nothing about their location is stored. The second approach is much lighter on privacy.
In the EU, location data is personal data. Employers need a lawful basis, must inform employees and should collect no more than necessary, which favours short, site-bound triggers over continuous tracking.
Geofences in TimeTracking
TimeTracking does not track location today. Geofence nudges are coming soon: reminders that only fire at a work site, without a location history. Until then, crews can use the kiosk with PIN at the site, or predictive time tracking that suggests hours from the roster.
