Why decimal hours matter
An hour has 60 minutes, not 100. That makes 8:30 equal to 8.5 hours, while 8.30 decimal hours is 8 hours and 18 minutes. Entering clock minutes as decimals is a classic payroll error: 8:30 entered as 8.30 underpays 12 minutes on a single day.
Payroll systems, spreadsheets and invoices calculate with decimal hours because they can be multiplied by an hourly rate directly. Time cards and clocks show hours and minutes because that is how people read time.
Decimal hours back to minutes
To go the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60. 7.4 hours is 7 hours and 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 7:24. Rounded decimals give approximate minutes: 0.33 hours is 19.8 minutes, which rounds to 20.
Common conversions
These come up on almost every timesheet:

- 20 minutes = 0.33 hours
- 30 minutes = 0.5 hours
- 40 minutes = 0.67 hours
- 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
- 50 minutes = 0.83 hours
