How to calculate overtime pay

  1. Pick weekly or daily overtime

Choose whether overtime starts after a number of hours per week or per day. Some contracts use both; check yours.

  2. Enter hours and threshold

Enter hours worked and the regular hours before overtime starts, such as 40 per week or 8 per day.

  3. Set rate and multiplier

Enter the hourly rate and the overtime multiplier, for example 1.5 for time and a half.

  4. Add double time if it applies

Optionally add a second threshold and multiplier, such as 2.0 after 12 hours in a day.

The overtime formula

Overtime hours are the hours worked above the threshold. Overtime pay is overtime hours multiplied by the hourly rate and the multiplier. Regular pay is the remaining hours at the normal rate.

Example: 46 hours in a week with a 40-hour threshold, €20 per hour and a 1.5 multiplier. Regular pay is 40 × €20 = €800. Overtime is 6 hours × €20 × 1.5 = €180. Total gross pay is €980.

Weekly vs daily overtime

With weekly overtime, only the total for the week matters: four 10-hour days add up to 40 hours and contain no overtime under a 40-hour threshold. With daily overtime, each day is checked separately: the same four days contain 8 hours of overtime under an 8-hour daily threshold.

Rules differ by country, sector and collective agreement. In the Netherlands and Germany, overtime pay is usually set in the employment contract or collective agreement rather than by statute. In the US, the federal rule is time and a half after 40 hours in a workweek, and some states add daily overtime. Always check the rules that apply to you.

Track overtime automatically

Calculating overtime by hand every week is slow and easy to get wrong when people work at several sites. TimeTracking's rule engine classifies hours as regular, overtime or allowance automatically and exports them to payroll with the right codes.

Frequently asked questions

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means overtime is paid at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate. At €20 per hour, one overtime hour pays €30.

How is overtime calculated per day?

Each day's hours above the daily threshold count as overtime. The daily overtime hours are then added up for the week.

Can I enter hours and minutes?

Yes. Enter 42:30 or 42.5; both mean 42 and a half hours.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. It calculates gross pay only. Taxes, social security and allowances depend on your country and personal situation.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
